최근 e-mail을 통해서 배포된 5월 19일자 ARRL letter에는, 미국 오레곤 주에 사는 아마추어무선사가 타워에서 안테나 작업을 하다가 숨졌다는 안타까운 뉴스가 실려있다.
미국 중서부 오레곤 주의 클라마쓰 폴스라는 곳에 살며, 꽤 유명한 DXer인 Ron J. Spears (W7IX) 라는 양반인데, 5월 14일 그가 작업하던 타워가 부러져 쓰러지는 바람에 현장에서 사망하였다고 한다. 향년 44세...
DXCC Honor Roll member (CW)이기도 한 Spears씨는, 당시에 170 피트 (약 50 m) 짜리 타워에서 40 m 빔 안테나를 내리는 중이었다고 한다. Spears가 꼭대기로부터 10 피트 지점에 도달 했을때, 타워 바닥으로부터 40피트 되는 부분이 갑자기 붕괴되면서 타워가 무너졌고 안전 벨트에 묶인채 타워와 함께 땅바닥으로 추락을 했다고 전해진다. 이광경은 마침 그를 돕기위해 현장에 있던 그의 부친 Aubrey씨에 의해서 목격이 되었다고 한다.
또 다른 목격자에 의하면 Spears씨가 안테나를 내리다가 놓치는 바람에 안테나 붐이 타워 상단부의 지지선 하나를 건드렸고 이 지지선이 끊어지자 타워가 흔들리면서 아랫 부분이 붕괴 된 것으로 보인다.
유족으로는 현장을 목격했던 아버지, 그리고 역시 아마추어무선사인 어머니 Oletta, (N7OHO)와 누이가 한사람 있는 것으로 전해 진다. Spears씨는 미국연맹 회원이었을 뿐만 아니라 남부 오레곤 packet 무선 연합체 (Southern Oregon Amateur Packet Radio Association)의 회원으로도 활동하고 있었다고 한다.

Well-known DXer Ron J. Spears, W7IX, of Klamath Falls, Oregon, died May 14 when an Amateur Radio tower he was working on in Northern California broke and toppled. He was 44.
News accounts say Spears, an ARRL DXCC Honor Roll member (CW), was attempting to retrieve a 40-meter beam from atop a 170-foot tower near MacDoel, California, when the structure collapsed and fell to the ground with Spears still attached by his safety belt. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His father, Aubrey, was assisting on the ground and witnessed the accident.
Spears had built the tower for its previous owner, Ray Balch, K6VX (SK), and used to do all of Balch's antenna work, so he had prior experience working on the structure. According to his father, Spears had first inspected the tower for safety. Spears earlier had bought the antenna from the current property owner and was attempting to bring it down in pieces. The heavy-duty support structure broke as Spears was about 10 feet from the top.
One unofficial report says that when Spears removed the antenna, it slipped and struck one of the top guy wires, starting the tower swaying until theguy broke. Another account says the beam "got away from" Spears and its huge boom struck and broke the tower guy. All but the lower 40 feet of the structure reportedly fell.
In addition to his father, survivors include his mother, Oletta, N7OHO, and a sister. Spears was a member of the ARRL and of the Southern Oregon Amateur Packet Radio Association.
