밴드를 watch 해 보니 'VK9DNX', Norfolk 섬에서의 DXpedition 운용이 한참인것 같다. 우리와는 비교적 가까운 거리에 있고 과거에도 이 섬에서가끔 운용이 있어 왔던 터라 all-time new는 아니더라도 밴드별로는 더러 교신이 필요한 프리픽스 임에는 틀림없다.
아시다시피, 호주 (Australia)에는 VK9으로 시작되는 독립 entity의 섬들이 여럿 있다. 이름하여,
Cocos-Keeling (VK8/C), Lord Howe (VK9/L), Mellish Reef (VK9/M), Norfolk (VK9/N), Willis (VK9/W), Christmas (VK9/X) 섬 들이다.
클러스터에 떠오른 Norfolk, 'VK9DNX'를 보고는 처음에는 'VK9NDX'의 오류가 아닐까 생각을 했다. 아닌게 아니라 더러는 'VK9NDX'로 올라온 경우도 있었지만 곧이어 'VK9DNX'로 정정한다는 spot이 올라오곤 했다. 'VK9DNX'가 맞다는 이야기다.
왜 이렇게 되었을까... 의문은 그들의 Web 페이지를 방문한 후 곧 풀렸다. 이번 Norfolk DXpedition팀은 애초에 그들이 사용 할 호출부호로 'VK9NDX'를 원했던 것으로 보인다. 그러나 호주 당국으로 부터 호출부호를 부여 받는 과정에 'VK9DNX'로 되었다는 것이다. 물론 실수에 의한 것은 아니었고, 호출부호 부여 원칙에 따른 것이라고 한다.
Suffix가 2 자리 인 경우, suffix 첫 번째 글자를 섬의 첫 글자로 하는 것 과는 달리, suffix가 3 자리 인 경우에는 suffix의 두 번째 글자를 섬이름의 첫글자로 하여 부여된다는 것이다, 즉슨,

Lord Howe Island - VK9*L*
Mellish Reef - VK9*M*
Norfolk Island - VK9*N*

Some people asked if we were issued the correct callsign. Why didn't you apply for VK9NDX? That would sound much better. Or made the authorites a mistake?

Different from the 2-letter suffix the first letter of the 3-letter suffix stands for the license class you apply for.
